Liphook u3a

is one of many u3as across the UK, each affiliated to the Third Age Trust. In brief, the u3a exists for the benefit of retired people who wish to learn and keep active. Members share their knowledge and experience and participate in a wide range of educational, social, and leisure activities.

History group

When the u3a History Group held the inaugural meeting in February 2013 we quickly realised that the group was too big to be accommodated in our sitting room and decided that the Millennium Centre would be the ideal place to hold our meetings. Accordingly, twelve of us gathered together in one of the Society Rooms which had been set out as we had asked with a long table and chairs around and a flip chart for us to begin our exploration of British History. One of our first moves was to elect a willing beverage maker and, using the hall kitchen and a large trolley we were assured of a regular supply of the essential cuppas.

After some years we outgrew the society room and moved across the vestibule to the Canada Room where we had the luxury of more space and we were able to sit-classroom like two to a table and set up our audio-visual equipment on separate tables. There was also the luxury of a permanent screen at our disposal-and we were nearer to the kitchen!

Over the years our numbers continued to grow so that the patient staff at the centre changed our seating arrangements again, so that now, with over twenty members, we have a less formal seating plan which works well. We are beginning to wonder if before much longer we will be such a large group that we will have to move into the main hall -but not just yet. We still welcome new members who have an interest in exploring British History and presenting their findings to the rest of the group, either with a long paper of approximately 30 minutes, or a brief life of about 5 or so minutes.

We’re a sociable and friendly set of people who spend a very happy few hours once a month sharing our love of times past delving into our country’s history.
