Event Details

12A (COMEDY/DRAMA)
Director: Thaddeus O’Sullivan With Maggie Smith, Kathy Bates, Laura Linney
Runtime: 90 mins
It’s 1967 in Ballygar, a hard-knocks community in outer Dublin. For the womenfolk who dream of throwing off the shackles of domestic life for a short moment of freedom, there’s just one chance: to win a pilgrimage to the sacred French town of Lourdes. And with a little benevolent interference from their cheeky and rebellious priest, close friends Lily, Eileen, Dolly and Sheila are the ‘lucky’ few to win this ticket of a lifetime at their riotous local raffle night.

WHY BOOK THIS FILM? For its three wonderful lead actresses. “At 88, Smith’s comic timing is as beautifully crisp as ever, but she also gets some fierce scenes of suppressed grief over the loss of her son and one lovely scene of reconciliation with Linney that is blindingly good. It’s all in the women’s gestures — a lowered head, a tight clasp of the hand — as if what they have to communicate might overpower any attempt to put it into words. When you see two world-class actresses click like that it’s miracle enough.” The Sunday Times “It’s a gentle, unchallenging film with a good heart and the period detail is scrumptious.” The Arts Desk
